Solo Piano Recordings

April 17, 2008

Photo of a Piano Keyboard Reflection in a Shiny Black Wooden PanelI bought a grand piano from a friend of mine a while back and have been diligently re-learning everything I used to be able to play when I was much younger (plus a few more pieces I’ve recently learned). So I recently decided to be brave and make some simple homemade recordings and post them to my site.

It’s an interesting experience to record yourself playing a musical instrument and actually sit down and listen to what others hear. It sounds completely different than when you’re physically playing it. And I don’t mean the quality of the recording. The phrasing, timing of the rhythm, acoustics, dynamic range, emotion, expression – everything sounds different. I’m not sure I can explain it, but it does. It’s also fun and exciting somehow.

So, in the spirit of sharing, here are 7 recordings of solo piano pieces I’ve been playing these days. They’re all saved as MP3 files.

Small Town Clock Tower
An original improvisation based on an Edward Weiss chord progression

The Cradle
By Larry Young, George Winston arrangement

Thanksgiving
By George Winston

Victor’s Piano Solo
By Danny Elfman, from the animated film “Corpse Bride”

Fantaisie Impromptu
By Frederic Chopin

La Complainte de la Butte
By Georges van Parys, the French title translates to “The Lament of the Mill”

The Great Gig in the Sky
By Rick Wright of Pink Floyd, sans female vocals (yes, that song)
